One day later four brothers and sisters from a tribal family were found murdered at their home in Jalgaon district, police arrested three people, including a minor.
The deceased – two girls aged 12 and three and two boys aged 11 and eight – were ax-killed by strangers on Thursday evening in the village of Borkheda Shivar in Raver Taluka, hours after their parents left and from their older brother to their home village of Madhya Pradesh to attend the funeral of a family member. Their bodies were discovered by the family owner on Friday morning.
The family, who belong to the Bhil tribe, had moved to the village from Madhya Pradesh eight years ago and had stayed and cultivated their owner’s banana plantation.
Jalgaon Police Director Pravin Mundhe said that throughout Friday and Saturday, police questioned several people, most of whom were boys under the age of 18. “Based on the evidence gathered at the scene of the crime, we people. We have some positive clues and all the leads so far point to their involvement in the crime, ”he said.
Police are also awaiting the autopsy report from the Jalgaon District Civilian Hospital to find out whether any of the children were sexually assaulted.
Mundhe also said the preliminary inspection revealed multiple injuries to the children’s bodies.
“Most of the injuries are to the neck and head. Some of the victims have more than one injury, ”he said.
Pratap Dighavkar, Inspector General of Police, Nashik Range, said the arrests of the detained suspects would most likely be announced on Sunday. A special investigation team led by Deputy Police Superintendent Kumar Chintha is investigating the murders.
However, Maharashtra’s Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh tweeted on Saturday that “the suspects have been arrested”. Deshmukh met the grieving parents on Saturday and brought them justice at the earliest.
Deshmukh also tweeted that Ujjwal Nikam, originally from Jalgaon, had been appointed special prosecutor in the case.
