Police said the 59-year-old suspect arrested on Friday could face a criminal threat charge, the Wichita Eagle reported.
Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple said he had read text messages received by another city official who asked him about the mayor’s address and threatened his life.
He said he was going to kidnap me and slit my throat and needed my address because I needed to see the executioner me and everyone who, something about tyranny, said Whipple .
It looked like the person was very upset with the mask warrants and he said something about not being able to see his mother due to COVID restrictions on homes for the elderly, he said.
Wichita Police spokesman Charley Davidson said no other local officials were reportedly targeted.
The arrest comes after more than a week as authorities say they thwarted a plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The authorities claim that members of two anti-government paramilitary groups participated in the plot in the case. Six men are charged in federal court with conspiracy to kidnap the Democratic governor. Eight others are indicted in state court for providing material support for terrorist acts.
