Pamela Goswami drugs case: Bengal BJP leader Rakesh Singh arrested

KOLKATA POLICE on Tuesday arrested Rakesh Singh, a member of the West Bengal state committee of the BJP and organizer of the party’s basti (slum) cell of Galsi in the Purba Burdwan district in connection with a case in which Pamela Goswami, 23 years old secretaries of state of BJP Yuva Morcha, were arrested for possessing 76 g of heroin.

Singh was summoned by the police under Article 160 CrPC after his name emerged during the investigation into the drug case. He had told the police in writing that he would not be available because he had a previous appointment in Delhi. His petition against the summons was dismissed by the High Court in Calcutta.

Police sources said he was taken to the local police station but have yet to confirm his arrest. Her two sons, Sivam Singh, 24, and Suvam Singh, 22, were also arrested by the Kolkata police for allegedly preventing the police from carrying out their duties. They were sent to the central dungeon of Lal Bazaar.

A day after her arrest on February 19, Pamela Goswami alleged that Rakesh Singh had hatched a plot to trap her and had also appointed a top BJP leader. “I was mentored by BJP leader Rakesh Singh, who is close to a senior BJP leader. I want CID to probe this. I have all the evidence, ”she said when she was taken to NDPS court in Alipur.

On Tuesday afternoon, officers from the Narcotics and Anti-Noisy Section of the Kolkata Police Detective Department searched Singh’s residence for about three hours. Police sources said Singh was not at home at the time and that his sons allegedly prevented them from performing their duties. “The police could only enter the house after two hours,” said Sujit Chakraborty, deputy commissioner of police, anti-noise section.

“Fourteen people entered my home. They found nothing. They told me to come for questioning … We asked the police to send a notice first, ”Subham said shortly before being arrested by the police.

Prior to joining the BJP in March 2019, Singh was in Congress and contested the Assembly elections in 2016 from the Port of Kolkata headquarters, but lost to Congress in Trinamool. He has more than two dozen criminal cases against him and was one of the defendants in the case of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar bust vandalism during Amit Shah’s roadshow in May 2019.

A day before Pamela’s arrest, she had a conversation with TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh. When contacted, Ghosh told the Indian Express, “Yes, she texted me on Thursday that she and a few other people with good wallets wanted to meet with me. I told her I was traveling and if she needed it she could call me. A few minutes later, I got a call. She was bothered, wanted to meet me and was planning to get out of something (sic). Asked about the allegations that it was a TMC conspiracy, he replied, “I don’t know who she is and this was the first time we spoke. His arrest shows a clear groupism at the BJP.

Two years ago, Pamela Goswami’s father, Kaushik Goswami, wrote to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Joint Police Commissioner and Jadavpur Police Station, alleging that one of Pamela’s friends, Prabir De, would have exposed her to drugs. Police had monitored the duo and arrested them on February 19 on the basis of a denunciation.

Pamela was a model and had acted in a few television series. On July 21, 2019, she and two other actors Rimjhim Mitra and Surojit Choudhury joined the BJP in the presence of BJP State President Dilip Ghosh.
