The mother of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Begum Shamim Akhtar, died in London on Sunday. She was 91 years old. Begum Akhtar had not been doing well for about a month, according to sources from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party. “On Sunday she took her last breath in London,” said PML-N deputy general secretary Attaullah Tarar.

She had traveled to London last February and was living with Nawaz and her grandchildren.

Tarar said Begum Akhtar’s body would likely be brought back to Lahore on Monday and buried next to the grave of her husband Mian Sharif at the Jati Umra Raiwind residence of the Sharif family.

Tarar said a request was being filed with the relevant authorities for the release of Nawaz’s younger brother and PML-N chairman Shahbaz Sharif to attend his mother’s final rites.

PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif, who has been declared “on the run” by a Pakistani court, is unlikely to return to the country to attend his mother’s final rites.

“Nawaz would attend his mother’s funeral prayers in London before the body is transported to Lahore,” a senior PML-N official told PTI. He said Nawaz is currently undergoing treatment related to small stones in his kidney. return to the country once he is fully recovered, ”he said.

Nawaz left for London in November 2019 after the Lahore High Court granted him a four-week leave to seek treatment abroad. He had submitted to the court an undertaking to return to Pakistan citing his experience of confronting the law and the justice within four weeks or as soon as he was declared in good health and fit to travel by doctors.

He was also released on bail in the Al-Azizia Mills corruption case in which he was serving a seven-year prison sentence in Kot Lakhpat prison in Lahore.

Pakistani army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Prime Minister Imran Khan, Pakistani People’s Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto and other politicians have expressed their condolences on the death of Nawaz’s mother.

General Bajwa “expresses his sorrow and sincere condolences for the sad passing of Begum Shamim Akhtar, mother of Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif / Mian Shehbaz Sharif”, said the director general of ISPR (Inter-service public relations) – l media wing of the military tweeted.
