A day after BJP and RLD supporters clashed in the village of Sohram in Muzaffarnagar, Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan claimed on Tuesday that it was planned by leaders of the opposition party and that ‘they were prompted by an announcement made through a mosque, even as RLD leader Ajit Singh. visited the area and told local residents that the police were “here for the public and not personally for a minister”.

Police said at least three people were injured in Monday’s clash while visiting Balyan.

Balyan, the local MP, told PTI he had urged local authorities to investigate the clash. “The people involved in the clash were not farmers but RLD officials,” he said. “It was a planned showdown, otherwise how can you explain the videos of the incident instantly posted on social media, or instantly tweet from an RLD leader?”

He also said: “I had been to Soram to attend a local mourning and it was a moment of grief, but the RLD office members watched raising slogans and they were incited by an announcement made by a local mosque. The whole incident was planned.

While visiting the village to meet the wounded, the RLD leader said: “The locks on the houses have been broken. People have been assaulted. The police must act…. The government is trying to divide you. They think the farmer doesn’t understand. But the truth is, they don’t understand the farmers… ”

He also said: “They (the authorities) say you can go to court if there are problems (but) can a 5 acre farmer go to court (against big industrialists)? How is he going to pay the lawyer? In contract farming, the government must guarantee fair prices. The government tells you that your land is going nowhere, but this is misleading.

Singh alleged that the debt in terms of harvesting rights had increased exponentially under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure.
