Hollywood stars Julia Roberts and Sean Penn will headlining Gaslit, an upcoming anthology series based on the award-winning Slow Burn podcast. Set at Starz, the first season of the show created by Robbie Pickering will focus on the Watergate scandal that brought down Richard Nixon’s presidency in 1974.
Described as a modern take on Watergate, the series “focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal – from the awkward and opportunistic subordinates of Nixon to the deranged fanatics aiding and abetting their crimes, to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring it all in.” a rotten business collapses, ”Starz said in a press release.
Roberts will play Martha Mitchell, a socialite Arkansan celebrity and wife of loyal Nixon attorney general John Mitchell (played by Penn).
Despite her party affiliation, she is the first person to publicly sound the alarm over Nixon’s involvement in Watergate, provoking both the presidency and her personal life.
As Attorney General, Mitchell is Nixon’s most trusted advisor and best friend. Temperament, rude and ruthless – but desperately in love with his famous outspoken wife – he will be forced to choose between Martha and the President.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, actors Armie Hammer and Joel Edgerton were also set to star in the project. However, they both got out due to scheduling conflicts.
Captain Fantastic director Matt Ross will direct the series, which will be produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, for Starz.
