The highlight of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Hollywood career, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, is also one of the best examples of ‘how to make a sequel’. A sequel usually means conflict, and the scale of the film grows larger. Ideally, without compromising its core entertainment value. And while many sequels take note of the first part of the aforementioned statement, they usually don’t bother to pay enough attention to the film’s engagement. That kind of attention is what sets Terminator 2 apart. Writer-director James Cameron hasn’t just upped the ante in terms of action choreography or visual effects, but characterization as well. The T-1000 is arguably ’90s Hollywood’s toughest enemy and Sarah Connor is as iconic as it gets.
The James Cameron director was released in 1991 and was as mainstream as a Hollywood actor could be. The bad guy was almost invincible, and the good guy was appropriately wooden. However, it was Linda Hamilton’s portrayal of Sarah Connor that garnered much praise. The actor played the role of an emotional but badass mother who could do anything to protect her child. Linda’s Sarah did not have superhuman abilities like the two terminators of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert Patrick, but the actor won audiences over with his undeniable on-screen presence. It helped that Linda not only played the part, but watched it as well.
The plot is new wine in an old bottle – from the Armageddon battle between good and evil, Machines vs Humans, the idea of freedom against overwhelming authority and uncertainty. The themes were deep but familiar and what made Terminator 2 so interesting was, of course, the way it was directed and shot. The truck and bike chase sequence is still etched in my mind. The continuous buildup of adrenaline, the tough hits and the relentless action, it was all very exciting. Arnold was probably born to play this role. Let’s be honest, Mr. Schwarzenegger could barely act, but he had a tremendous body and sense of action. And believe it or not, Terminator 2 is still around, at least when it comes to the artificial intelligence (AI) bit. Cameron expressed it in an interview with The Associated Press.
The filmmaker said, “I think the film is as timely as it ever was, probably more less on the nuclear side and more on the AI side and dealing with our relationship with our own technology. And how we really have the opportunity to make ourselves obsolete. We must be vigilant and constantly aware. So whether it’s climate change, or the threat of an AI that could replace us or quickly change our world to a negative outcome for humans or the weather – these are things we need to be constantly on top of. vigilant.
Here’s an interesting anecdote about Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and one that tells a lot about how cool it is – it’s the only 20th century sequel to win an Oscar. Not only was the film critically acclaimed, it was also a huge box office success.
