Two workers were killed, five more went missing and more than 30 were burned in the fire at a United Phosphorus Limited (UPL) factory in Jhagadia GIDC in Bharuch district on Tuesday.
The fire was brought under control Tuesday morning and slaughtering activities were underway at the time of this report. The company has received a closure notice from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DISH).
As a result of the explosion, the windows of various houses in neighboring villages such as Dadheda, Phoolwadi, Kapalsadi, were broken.
Bharuch MD Modiya collector said: “The fire has been brought under control. Two workers died while five others are still missing and eight are still admitted to Jayaben Modi Hospital.
In a statement, the company said that since factories had been closed on February 5 for its scheduled annual boiler inspection, no chemical reactions were taking place. “Prima facie, it looks like the fire could have been caused by a fire / explosion in the solvent which could have been caused by an electrical short circuit. … The company will stand by and compensate family members of deceased and affected workers, ”the statement said.
