Congress flays house arrest of CPI leaders

On Sunday, Sunkara Padmasri, a member of the APCC Coordinating Committee, condemned the house arrest of CPI leaders as they visited the Polavaram site.

In a statement, she called the act undemocratic and said it only reflected the government’s insecurity on the issue of the project.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, as leader of the opposition in the past, had said that Polavaram was the dream of his father and former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, and that he would make it come true, said the Congress leader, adding that he did not appear to show interest in the early completion of the project now.

She said that Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy was unable to pressure the Center as corruption cases against him had weakened its position.

She said the YSRCP government unleashed an autocratic rule in the state where no one had the freedom to speak their minds or organize peaceful protests.

She said that instead of wasting precious time, the government should focus on achieving the promised Special Category Status (SCS) for the state, completing the Polavaram project and building a new capital in Amaravati.
