A Mumbai court on Sunday returned comedian Bharti Singh and her husband Harsh Limbachiya, arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau following the seizure of drugs from their home here, in police custody until December 4. The court will hear their bail applications on Monday.

The NCB arrested Singh on Saturday and her husband early Sunday morning after the seizure of ganja (cannabis) at their home in suburban Andheri. The couple were presented to a lower court on Sunday afternoon.

“The court returned the two defendants to judicial detention until December 4,” NCB prosecutor Atul Sarpande told PTI. The couple filed for bail shortly after being remanded in custody. The lower court would hear the bail applications on Monday.

NCB recovered 86.5 g of ganja during the search. This is considered a “ small amount ” under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), an official said. Acting on a whistleblower, the NCB on Saturday conducted a search of Singh’s office and residence as part of its investigation into suspected drug use in the entertainment industry.

Up to 1000g of ganja is considered a small amount, resulting in a prison sentence of up to six months and / or a fine of Rs 10,000. Possession of a commercial quantity – 20 kg or more – can lead to up to 20 years in prison. For the intermediate amount, the penalty can be up to 10 years in prison. “Singh’s name came up during the interrogation of a drug dealer,” the official said.

She has appeared in a number of comedy and reality television shows and has hosted a few such shows as well. The NCB investigated suspected drug use in Bollywood following the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June this year based on WhatsApp discussions involving drugs.

The central agency earlier arrested Rajput’s girlfriend, actress Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik, some employees of the deceased movie star and a few others under various sections of the NDPS law. Rhea Chakraborty and a few other defendants are currently out on bail.
