Barcelona faced an injury crisis as well as a results crisis on Sunday after defenders Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto were sidelined for extended periods following injuries suffered in the 1-0 La Liga defeat on Saturday against Atletico Madrid.
A Barca medical report said veteran center-back Pique, who limped off the pitch in the second half in tears, sprained the internal lateral ligament of his right knee and suffered a partial injury to the crucial anterior ligament.
The statement did not say how long Pique would be out, but Spanish media reports estimated he would be out for between three and five months.
Right-back Sergi Roberto, meanwhile, has broken a muscle in his thigh and will be out for two months, Barca added.
The loss of both defenders builds on previous injuries to Samuel Umtiti and Ronald Araujo and leaves coach Ronald Koeman with just three defenders (Clement Lenglet, Jordi Alba and Sergino Dest) available for Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Dynamo Kiev.
Barca will also be without striker Ansu Fati for the next four months after undergoing knee surgery earlier this month, while midfielder Sergio Busquets is out with a knee problem but is due to return from ‘by the end of the month.
Yannick Carrasco’s goal for Atletico inflicted a third defeat in eight league games to Barca, 10th in the table, nine points adrift of second-placed Atleti and Real Sociedad.
