Washington: The Trump campaign filed a petition for the recount of the votes in Georgia, days after President-elect Joe Biden snatched the Republican stronghold from just over 12,000 votes.
Biden became the first Democrat to win the key state of the battlefield since 1992 after a manual recount of nearly five million votes, which lasted for several days.
Georgia had not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since Bill Clinton in 1992.
In the event of a recount, election officials in Georgia will have to re-examine the five million legal ballots that were hand recounted and verified.
“We ensure that all aspects of Georgia State law and the US Constitution are followed so that every legal vote is counted. President Trump and his campaign continue to insist on an honest recount in Georgia, which must include matching signatures and other vital guarantees, ”the Trump campaign said in a late-night statement on Saturday.
“Without matching signatures, this recount would be a sham and would again allow illegal votes to be counted. If there is no signature match, it would be as wrong as the counting and recounting of the initial votes, ”the statement released by the campaign’s legal team said.
“Let’s stop giving people false results. There must be a time when we stop counting illegal ballots. Hopefully that will happen soon, ”the campaign said, a day after Georgia’s secretary of state, who is also from the same Republican party, officially certified the election results that were narrowly won by Biden.
After the initial vote count in the state, Biden led with around 14,000 votes, prompting the Georgian Secretary of State to order a manual recount that slightly reduced Biden’s lead to 12,284. Georgia has 16 votes. in the electoral colleges.
President-elect Biden won 306 electoral votes versus 232 for Trump. To win the race for the White House, the successful candidate would need to have at least 270 electoral votes out of the 538 members of the Electoral College.
Trump won Georgia by five percentage points in 2016 over Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Trump refused to concede the election results and has filed several lawsuits to challenge poll results in several states.
“I cannot accept the results of an election with hundreds of thousands of fraudulent votes, enough to easily reverse the election. You’re just unhappy that I’m bringing the troops back to their place! Trump said in a tweet on Saturday night.
