Mumbai: A day after comedian Bharti Singh was arrested, her husband Harsh Limbachiya was also arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau on Sunday after drugs were seized from their home, NCB officials said. Singh was arrested by NCB on Saturday after seizing ganja (cannabis) from her home in suburban Andheri, they said.
Now her husband has also been arrested, said NCB area manager Sameer Wankhede. Singh and her husband are both accused of consuming ganja, another official said.
The couple along with two other people arrested in the case would be brought before a court here after their medical examinations, he said. A case has been registered against the accused under the provisions of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), he added.
Acting on a whistleblower, the BCN raided Singh’s office and residence on Saturday as part of its investigation into suspected drug use in the entertainment industry, and seized 86.5g of cannabis during the search, an investigative agency official earlier. said. “Ms. Bharti Singh and her husband Harsh Limbachiya have accepted the consumption of ganja,” said a statement from NCB.
The amount allegedly seized from Singh’s possession is considered “small amount” under the law, as opposed to “commercial amount,” an NCB official said. Up to 1000g of ganja is considered a small amount, resulting in a prison sentence of up to six months and / or a fine of Rs 10,000. Possession of a commercial quantity – 20 kg or more – can lead to up to 20 years in prison. For the intermediate amount, the penalty can be up to 10 years in prison.
“Singh’s name came up during the interrogation of a drug dealer,” the official said. She has appeared in a number of comedy and reality television shows and has hosted a few such shows as well.
The NCB investigated suspected drug use in Bollywood following the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June this year based on WhatsApp discussions involving drugs. The central agency earlier arrested Rajput’s girlfriend, actress Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik, some employees of the deceased movie star and a few others under various sections of the NDPS law.
Rhea Chakraborty and a few other defendants are currently out on bail.
